One Last Moment (EdmundxReader oneshot)

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean that", Edmund said at once.

You replied, "You shouldn't be sorry for telling the truth. After all, you and Lucy can't stay in Narnia forever…Narnia could never take the place of your true home."

You gave him a sad smile and tried to turn away, only to no avail when he saw your eyes beginning to water. He quickly sat down on the sand with you and wrapped his arms around you.

"Come with me then", he pleaded.

"I cannot."

And before he could ask you why, Iyou said, "I used to feel in my world that no one really understood me. I never really fit in, and I always thought that there was something missing.  I belong in Narnia and you… you belong with your family."

You suddenly sat up and grabbing hold of his hand, asked him to walk with you.

"Will the sea barrier go on forever?" he asked, referring to that wall of water that separated Aslan's Country from the rest of the world.

"As long as we keep walking it will, but I don't think walking on the beach is something memorable. It's too cliché for something like this."

"Like what?" he asked.

"Like our last day together… Have you ever walked on the sea before?"

"No." he answered, with a curious look in his eyes.

Both of you stepped on to the sea as it seemed to turn into a smooth wet surface, with the lilies still floating all around you. It wasn't a kind of hard surface, but it was stable and all the time your feet were caressed by the warm sweet water that surrounded you.
He gasped with surprise, you chuckled a little and said, "About the war, it will end and your father will come home"

"How do you know?"

"All things come to an end, but with endings there are always new beginnings… You stole my heart that day when Caspian was crowned king, and I guess I wanted to give you something to remember me by."

"How could I forget you?" he replied.

"You tell me what every girl wants to hear. You're such a gentleman Ed… About the white witch", you trailed off, letting the unfinished sentence hang among the sound of the waves washing on to the shore.

"What about her?" he asked. He had that troubled look in his eyes again, but it wasn't the usual anger that seemed to revive whenever anyone mentioned Jadis in his presence.

"I know you feel as if you need to prove yourself. You don't need to live anything down. You have to forgive yourself, Edmund. It is only then you will find peace from her. The only thing you need to take away from your time on Narnia is the lessons you have learned… "

He suddenly leaned down and kissed you. In utter shock, you froze for a moment but slowly kissed him back. His hands cupped your face and your fingers were in his hair. It felt like you were the only two people in the world, and you wanted it to last forever.
When you finally parted, he took your hand again and asked you, "How long will we walk?

"As long as we need", you said.

Usually such a cryptic answer would have had him pestering me with questions, but given the circumstances, he didn't. Both of you began to talk about everything under the sun, but grew quiet when you found yourselves circling back toward Aslan and the others.
You got back to Lucy and them and all too soon he was saying his goodbyes to Caspian and the others, and when he got to you he whispered, "I love you."

You looked at him in surprise and whispered back, "I love you too" and slipped an envelope into his pocket.

A final kiss and he was suddenly off, walking into the hole of swirling water that Aslan had temporarily created.
You smiled as he turned back. You closed your eyes as the hole closed and imagined how he would react when he read what you had written. You saw his small sweet smile as he read the words

If you love something, set it free…and you knew that you would both do just that.
